Bio

Luís Mota is a composer and orchestrator with a keen interest for the symphony orchestra and its creative possibilities. In his music, Luís likes to explore emotion and seeks to create moments of escape and immersion, through the combination of timbres, the contrast, overlap, and manipulation of sound perception.

In 2021 Luís published his first piano album entitled “Invisible Cities”, inspired by the book of the same name by Italo Calvino. At the moment, in addition to his personal projects, Luís is dedicated to rescoring silent films from the 1920s, for Penteo Films SL, dividing his professional life between Portugal and Belgium.

While holding a scholarship from the Calouste Gulbenkian Foundation, Luís obtained a master’s degree in Violin and Composition for Screen from the Royal College of Music in London. He spent most of his professional life in England, having had the opportunity to work with renowned performers and to play in the English National Opera.

Luís wrote the soundtrack for the animated film “Part” (dir. Iris Abols, 2015), “JK Starley” (dir. Steve Roberts, 2018), “Aqui Entre Nós” (dir. Rita Castro, 2019) and for the short film “Xah-yu” (dir. Zaur Kourazov, 2020). He collaborated in the orchestration of the television series “Veleno” and the video game “Card Shark” (music by Andrea Boccadoro, 2021).

Luís also orchestrated the piano piece “Heart of Darkness” (composed by James Paul White), arranged and recorded two Christmas songs for the movie “Silent Night” (dir. Will Thorne, 2020) and adapted “April 3rd” (composed by Seayool Kim, 2020) for string quartet.

Luís would like to deepen the role that music can play in the preservation of cultures and nature. He is interested in developing multidisciplinary projects with visual artists, in order to explore the relationship between music and image, both on the big screen and on stage.
